Scrapyard skeleton

I found this scrap metal skeleton at the Washington County Fair in Fayetteville, Arkansas. Surprisingly, it was more anatomically acurate than many of the plastic skeletons for sale at Halloween time.

Anatomical Oscar Awards

Way back in March, around Oscar time, I discovered this statue while visiting Hollywood. Created by artist D*Face, it featured an Oscar statue, melting to expose muscle and bones. The title of this piece? "Beauty Is Skin Deep".

You can read more about this sculpture and artist here.

Fashionable skeletons

"A photographer will always be in need of his or her muse. During the mid 1990s famed fashion photographer Richard Avedeon shot iconic model Nadja Auermann various times (Versace ads included). The collaboration between the two peaked in 1995 when Avedon shot a 25 pages long spread for The New Yorker of Auermann together with a skeleton, labelling the series In memory of the late Mr. & Mrs. Comfort. Auermann appears in million dollar dresses together with her deceased husband, Mr Comfort. One of the most impressive fashion spreads from that time, Auermann was clad in pieces from Gaultier, Issey Miyake, Lacroix, Comme des Garçons, Manolo Blanik, Thierry Mugler, Versace and Margiela. Smoking, showering and dancing in a ring of fire it’s one of those moments in editorial history that makes you pause, reconsider and whisper 'oh, wow'."

Finally, a pin-up calendar that can hang in doctors' offices! Why should mechanics have all the fun?

Skeleton bracelet for the uber-wealthy

I like the idea of this skeleton bracelet by Delfina Delettrez, but $29,000!?! No way! Maybe someone on Etsy will come up with an inexpensive variation.

Animal skeleton wallpaper

We're in the process of repainting my son's room. Maybe we should consider this wallpaper instead.
"Most children get to an age when they’re intrigued by slightly macabre things. They watch Dr Who on a Saturday night – from behind the sofa. And they can’t help poking with a stick at that dead bird they found. It’s a bit scary, but it’s fascinating. It’s even fun. And they’re often intrigued by skeletons, too. Perhaps it’s a way of beginning to get to grips with the dark side of life, with mortality, in a safe way. Perhaps it’s just because skeletons have such fantastic shapes. Animal Magic explores this fascination in a light-hearted way by presenting a slightly sinister side of the traditional, benign family pet. We’ve printed the pet’s skeleton on top of its silhouette in a varnish of the same colour. This means it shouldn’t show at night – so it’s not too scary when the lights are out. But it catches the light during the day when all the spooks are gone. So the children’s interest in the dark and scary can be indulged in an intriguing way. And still be beautiful."

Ventriloquist dummy collection

A couple of thoughts on this collection...
1) I'm pretty sure those figures come alive at night and kill people.
2) Strange that the clown figure looks so much more menacing than the skeleton figure.

Largest skeleton

I'm not sure why this giant skeleton has a beak, but I do know that it's by Gino De Dominicis, it's 24 meters long, and additional photos can be found here and here.

Skeleton chairs

This is one of my favorite columns in Time Out. Each week, they find a piece of junk on the street and turn it into something amazing. This transformation (from January 2007) is particularly amazing though.

Tasteless Halloween

I don't know. I'm no prude, but even I found this Halloween prop to be in slightly poor taste.
