UPDATE: What Should I Do About The Witch

Back in May, on the verge of moving to a new home, I asked you for some advice. Specifically, "What should I do about the witch?" Well, 4 months later I'm please to announce that the witch made the journey with me. I'm still not sure how I'll display her in the new yard, but I'm sure inspiration will strike eventually. Hoist her onto the roof with a crane? Surround her with black fabric as though she's melting into the ground? We'll see...

What should I do about the witch?

Sorry that I haven't updated this blog in a while. I'm in the process of purchasing a new home, so I've been fairly distracted this past week. I hope to have everything sorted out within the next few days, so hopefully I'll be able to resume my postings. (And trust me, I have tons of photos, links and items to share.)

In the meantime, I need some advice. If we move to the new home, I'm not sure I can bring the witch. (Read more about her here) She's big and beautiful, but there wouldn't necessarily be a proper place to display her. I could sit her on the ground, but that might look weird. So...

If I decide to get rid of her, do you think I could find her a good home? Do you think there are any yard haunters reasonably close to NJ that would want her?

I love this idea. Dave Lowe does some amazing stuff.

There's a witch in Central Park

Designed by English-born architect Jacob Wrey Mould in the mid-1800's, this carving can be found on the Bethesda Terrace (overlooking Bethesda Fountain) in New York's Central Park. "Mould chose representative wildlife and seasonal design motifs. There are also carvings symbolic of day: a rising sun, a crowing cock. Night is represented by a lamp and book, a bat and owl, and a witch flying over a Jack-o'-lantern."

Giant witch picture collection

I've never seen so many witches in one place before. I'm bad at estimating things, but I would guess that this site has more than 3 trillion pictures of witches! (Ok. Maybe that's a slight exaggeration. Probably closer to a thousand, but that's still a ton of pointy hats and broomsticks.) Maybe I can persuade them to add a photo of my witch....

My display was damaged tonight

There was a huge storm in my area tonight and this gorgeous "stone" column was badly damaged. Why is it that high winds only kick up on my block during the 3 weeks that my front yard is filled w/ carved foam? Now I have to spend much of the day tomorrow making repairs. Plus, the lights in one of my giant witch's eyes went out today. It would be easy enough to fix if she wasn't perched on top of my roof. Not sure how I'll fix that one.

Inflatable decorations

I'll be the first to admit that I've never had much respect for inflatable Halloween decorations. I'd rather see a few well-carved pumpkins than a 6-foot-tall Scooby-Doo dressed as a witch. Creatable Inflatables has made me change my tune though. Their figures are much more impressive than anything you'll find at Party City. They carry 15 and 25-foot-tall witches, and a Frankenstein that measures a whopping 35 feet tall!

I'm sure that these inflatables are way too expensive for most residential decorators, but business owners may want to consider renting a 20-foot-tall grim reaper for the Halloween season. I'd certainly be more likely to patronize a business with one of these out front.

What a witch!

A giant witch sitting on a roof with the moon in the backgroundThat's right. I'm the lunatic with the giant witch on his roof. As promised, here are all the gorey details... I discovered the witch in Media, PA. She was created as an advertising piece for the local theatre company's production of "The Wizard Of Oz". They told me I could have her for $100 as long as I "got her off of the marquee before Saturday." Otherwise, she was headed for the dumpster. With the help of some strong friends and a 20A giant witch advertising the Wizard of Oz on top of a theatre's marquee foot UHaul I was able to get her back to NJ. Unfortunately, I wasn't able to take her lower half (which was approx. 20 feet tall!),A giant witch being lifted onto a roof by a crane but the torso is more than big enough for me. I like to say that we used to have a two car garage, but now we have a one witch, one car garage. The torso is approx. 12 feet tall with an 11 foot armspan. She weighs about 300 pounds, so each year I have to hire a crane to lift her into place. She is tethered to the house at four points. In the yard, I poured two steel-reinforced concrete columns (hidden in the bushes) so I could attach her to the ground with a pair of aircraft cables. I've watched her during 50 mile an hour winds and she doesn't move an inch!
