Horror Friends

This is kind of funny. It's a parody of "Friends" starring Michael Meyers, Freddy Krueger, Jason Voorhees, Hannibal Lecter and OJ Simpson. They did a pretty good job of replicating the show's opening credits where the entire cast inexplicably dances around a fountain.

Mini-hearse

Too bad this 1:18 scale hearse is sold out. I've been looking for an appropriately sized vehicle to transport the 1:18 size corpse that's been stinking up my house since Halloween.

Gwen Stefani's Halloween costume

Seems like most female celebrities dress up in the standard "Sexy _____" variety of costumes for Halloween each year. You know the ones... "Sexy Witch," "Sexy Pirate," "Sexy Snow White," etc. (If you don't believe me, check out this massive collection of celeb costumes from 2009).

That's why I was so happy to see Gwen Stefani dressed as Jessie the cowgirl from Toy Story 2. It's a nice family-friendly costume for your typical super-famous rock star / mother of two. And surprisingly (or not), she even manages to make it kind of sexy.

Shocking Autopsy game

This game is just like the classic "Operation" except you have to remove razorblades and throwing stars instead of butterflies and buckets. Oh yeah, you also get SHOCKED if you touch the sides! Available from Stupid.com.

6 year old art

We made an interesting discovery this Halloween season. Turns out my son is excellent at drawing things that are right in front of him. Give him a bowl of fruit, and the drawing will look like a bowl of fruit. Give him a Frankenstein doll, and the drawing will look like Frankenstein's monster. On the other hand, if you ask him to draw a telephone from memory, the resulting piece of art is likely to look like either a plate of spagetti or an amoeba. And while I personally love anything that he draws, he has enjoyed spending the past weekend drawing almost every Halloween-related item in our house. Here are three of his recent renderings.

400 year old skull clock

If you've got an extra $135,000 hanging around, you might want to purchase
this clock. "During the first minute, the skull's expression seems to smile, the second minute it seems to laugh, the next appears to scream and finally, the jaws snap shut, as if the skull were trying to bite something. At the same time, one of the snakes slowly sinks back down into one of the eye sockets, while the other slowly comes out of the other eye, before retracting suddenly, as the first snake again springs out from its eye-socket. And to view the time, just open up the skull cap!"

It's Tim Burton's world. We're only living in it.

Nearly a year ago I posted this article on a Tim Burton-inspired fashion spread. Well here's another one (from Harper's Bazaar) for all you Burton fans. "Shot by Tim Walker and entitled Tim Burton's Tricks and Treats, it's based on Tim Burton's universe and features the man himself alongside a dazzling array of goth frocs and some of his defining characters." And check out that gigantic skeleton marionette! Where can I get one of those?

Goldbar

Why didn't I know about this place until now? Right here in NYC is a tiny (only holds about 75 people at a time) drinking establishment named Goldbar. What makes this place worthy of a mention on Haunt Style? The walls are covered with thousands of gold painted skulls! Gotta check that joint out!

Very Hungry God

Here's a cool new photo of a scupture I wrote about last year. Entitled "Very Hungry God" (2006), this "enormous human skull made of a jumble of stainless-steel pots, vessels and cooking utensils dazzels not only in its scale and shiny materiality, but also because it so successfully transforms such everyday wares into a monument to the transcience of of human life." Dead and decaying things

For custom-made shrunken heads, Feejee mermaids and assorted body parts, the only place to go is Higley's. My favorite quote on the entire site is this: "In my career as a Scenes of Crime Officer I saw many a dead and decomposing body and I can tell you that your 'Dead Man's Hand' is absolutley spot on. Congratulations."

Scare Factory

If you've got some extra dough laying around, allow me to suggest hopping over to the Scare Factory and purchasing their haunted grand piano. It's gorgeous! "Beautifully detailed gothic piano features Grim Reaper relief sculpture on lid with skull and gold leaf details throughout body. When activated a mob of 13 skeletons come screaming out from under the lid." There are two versions available - animated and static. In my opinion, static is the way to go. Not only is the animation not particularly scary, but getting the static version will save you $2800! (The animated version costs about $6200. The static version is a more economical $3400.)

I hate wearing sweaters, but for this I would certainly make an exception.

Porcelain skull

Here's a great lamp found bedside at Paris' Hotel Amour. Love the glowing eye sockets!
UPDATE: I just learned that this lamp is by Undercover designer Jun Takahashi and Australian artist Misha Hollenbach (of the streetwear label P.A.M.). It's called the "Black Mass Lamp" and is available in either spooky black or classic white. Apparently, "it took two years to create, stands 18 inches high, and features two interchangeable "eyeball" globes that glow from within an ornate human skull form. The collage shade covers two separate light sources, both of which can be adjusted by dimmer switches disguised as scattered pills."
